chicky
Here are some semi-random pictures of spring in Tehran, in case you don't miss it bad enough.
I saw this and remembered our little attempt at adopting one of these cute little baby chickens last summer. We were walking en route to IPM on tajrish sq. and we came across a pet shop that were selling baby chickens for 250 tomans (25 cents?). So, my friend Mehdi, went into a philosophical phase of pondering how a living being can be so cheap, decided to make one of the chicks feel special and buy one, against my advice. He wasn't carrying cash so I paid for it, so technically it was mine.
I must admit though it was the cutest thing EVER. We named her (or him? whatever) Choochool (!!!!) After accompanying us to some coffee shops where she was given special treatment from the owner, and shitting repeatedly on my hand, we took her to my place.
She wandered around my grandparents' house a bit, of course everyone adored Choochool, but it was making too much noise. So it was transfered to Mehdi's house, but her stay didn't last long cuz soon enough she got on his parents' nerves too (with all the noise) and they gave it away to their neighbors children and we never heard from her again.
It was good though, very very cute, and they get really ugly once they hit puberty anyway, and that's when you light up the joojeh kabab charcoal.
.
My dad built a chicken coop in every house we lived in and we used to have these little balls of fluff running all over the place. They are very cute and loud until they get older and ugly. Then it's time for some fesenjoon.

i) when i was living in iran, the boys in the neighbourhood would always buy chicks and dye them different colours. then they would be mean to them and poke them with sticks and i would cry to make them stop.
ii) when i was little and stupid, i thought that the sauce in fesenjoon was chocolate because it tasted sweet and i thought everything sweet was chocolate. so i went through this phase where i called fesenjoon "chocolate chicken"

why u'd name ur pet "clitoris" is baffling to me, even more so is introducing it to ur grandparents, mehdi's family, etc.
btw folks, how do u dye them?

hahhahahah ... finally someone with good enough persian vocab ...
well my grandparents were not aware of it's name ... to them it was just hte joojeh... of course .... we only called them that in private

oh and about dying them, i'd assume immersing them violently and inconsiderately into a bucket of paint.

A lecture on chickens
I used to have generations of them & they were all cute even when they got old. The "mahally" ones are cute until the day they die. The "machiny" ones lose their cuteness when they get older. Also, the "machiny" ones usually die earlier than "mahally" ones and that's so unfortunate. In order to use them, do not kill them (afterall, they are your pets!). Instead, use their eggs (if they are female)! As for the roosters, you just need one (but an alive one). By the way, it is cruel to die the chickens (how would you feel if a frightening giant did this to you?) and they do not immerse the chickens in a bucket of paint in order to die them.
A cherished memory
I almost have the same memory!! Years ago on the last day of middle school's final exams, my best friend & I took a walk from Vanak square to Tajrish square. Somewhere close to Tajrish square, we bought two baby chickens. We too took them to a coffee shop ... . Yadesh bekheir! Those days were the best! Everything was much simpler.

This reminded me of the two baby ducks we were keeping in our apartment back in Tehran. They were yellow and cute when we bought them but they turned into an ugly pale color when they grew up. Anyhow, our pets had very tragic deaths. One was decapitated by some bird when the two of them were enjoying some fresh air outside. The other was washed, shampooed and blow dried by my sister. At the end of this beauty treatment the poor thing passed out and eventually died. God bless them both!

Nope! Every year at the end of the final exams, I would force my best friend (she was/is not into sports) to take a long walk with me. So, that specific year (last year of middle school) we decided to walk from Vanak to Tajrish square. Although it was so much fun & I'll never forget it, by the time we got to Tajrish we were too tired to walk back home (which used to be close to Vanak). So we took a cab halfway home.

Just for the record...I was carrying cash that day I just didn't have any change that's all. ;)
Just kidding...
But seriuosly it was hard to pay some money (1000 tomans = 1 Dollar!) and actually get some change back....for another life!!!
