groups in orkut
I don't know man, this "groups" things in orkut, is sort of a sketchy subject for me. I mean some groups are ok, and I understand. Like the cities and neighbourhoods, or university groups. Those are stuff you feel a part of, and don't mind joining others in solidarity. Music bands and actors or movies are also ok I guess, you can actually get to know some bands you might not have heard about and that's always good.
But then there are other groups that I can't justify their existence for anything other than showing-off. Some of them are just plain stupid. Like "Guitarists", or "Pianists". I mean, other than flashing to the world that you play an instrument (which means you're part of an elite group of only you, and like a million other people) what's the point of joining such a group?
Or then there are these groups that have advanced topics. Like "Einstein's Relativity Theory". I don't think there's a single person in there that actually knows the details of Einstein's Relativity Theory. And what are you going to do there anyway ? Add something to the theory ? Discuss it in the forum ? What garbage!
There are also all these other sophisticated and advanced scientific groups that I see no purpose for. Surely, at such advanced level, there are more specialized and better resources and forums than a friend networking site such as Orkut!!!! So I see no point in them other than trying to convey a fake feeling of sophistication. If I want to research or learn something about Finite Element Methods, I go read a textbook, or search through the literature and specialized website. I definitely don't go to Orkut.
I think other groups for science enthusiasts are nice, like astronomy enthusiasts, or stuff like that. It could be a good forum to learn stuff at the beginner level, but not for the more advanced stuff.
So, there you have it. My current attitude towards groups.
.
haha
Einstein's Relativity Theory group !
i bet if you look up their profiles, you will definitely find "single" and "interested in dating women" boxes checked!

I am amazed anyone can use orkut, all these social networks are cool for about 2 weeks and then you see them for what they are a free dating service. I check my orkut account once a month delete the spam and look at the digital photography forum. Every single time I am sorry that I looked. You are 100% correct if I wanted to know/look up something about digital photography I would go to a website that's dedicated to that not orkut. Oh and the fact that it's slow as hell doesn't help

Another typical comment from someone who "simply knows everything and doesn't ask". Obviously, Science is not for such people, for science is merely based on the sense of curiosity and the need for asking questions. For someone so naive and closed minded to discriminate people based on their looks and style, it's not surprising to read another such non sense.
Get over yourself and stick with TinTin dude.

i don't those social networking sites. i have accounts but i don't really understand the purpose. friendster, orkut, etc. etc. the communications department at my university invited me to myspace.com, which is essentially another knock-off, and uhm.. yeah.. i never use it. :)

Hi,
well, Orkut is a frendship and dating wesite and Orkut communities mostly show the member's interests.
It's not bad that the fans of Einstine or Guitar players meet in Orkut just because they share common interests. Or is it?
I think you can find much more proffessional forums on each of those topics in Internet (like say in google communities) and join them, if you wish.
As a matter of fact I personally have another reaon to be a little excited about Orkut communities. I have bookmarked many of them just to remind me of different issues I have had some passion for at some point in my life. with the hope that I can get back to them later on.
As you see, there is no place for being that serious about Orkut, anyways. Or it will look like nagging :)
thanks for all the thoughts
Ali
