The Varsity
I haven't been up to writing any coherent entry here.
I just wanted to bring up the Varsity issue. As in the [non-existent] stadium, not the paper. One of the first things that caught my attention when I moved to Toronto last year was the fact that UofT didn't have a single propper stadium. Specially since I had visited a couple of American universities before comign here (UVA and UMD) and they had unbelievable stadiums. The UVA one had a 70,000 capacity, I was totally in awe. Even UBC had the Thunderbirds, which although not big it was still a decent sporting venue and worked well for the Soccer and Football teams.
When I moved to TO, the once-existing Varsity stadium had been torn down and there were talks of plans to build a new one, which was promising.
Just last week, UofT announced that they scrapped the plan, due to cost overruns. Honestly, I was utterly pissed off by the news. I probably wouldn't even still be here when the stadium was supposed to be finished, but the less than convincing excuses brought by UofT really bothers me. I think it's simply disgraceful that a university of this size and calibre doesn't even have a propper stadium, and the administration simply doesn't give a shit.
What a shame. I might do an editorial cartoon on this issue soon in the Varsity (the paper)!
.
They've got one-billion in the bank.
