Shopgirl
Reading the mixed reviews for Shopgirl (surprising in retrospect), I had prepared myself to be slightly disappointed when I went to see it tonight - eventhough somehow I knew from the trailer that it was gonna be my type of movie.
The preparation turned out to be unnecessary though, as I really liked this flick. It definitely was 'my type' of movie, now on the same 'good movies' list as 'Lost in Translation', 'The Royal Tenenbaums', 'Amelie', and 'Last Life on the Universe'. Perhaps to a lesser degree, even 'the Life Aquatic'.

What all of these have in common is varrying (yet always existing) degrees of quirkiness, beautiful imagery, a lot of subtlety and a plot in which a lot of times, nothing happens!
Eventhough many might not like these films exactly because nothing significant happens, that's one of the things i like about them. It leaves just enough for speculation, often without being too self-consciously pretentious as many art-house movies are, and yet you get to see a lot of beautifully shot scenes and moments. To me, that's pretty much all a great film needs.
Of course, a gorgeous leading actress always helps, and Claire Danes is exactly that.
.
i am agree.

I liked it too. So very much. It's amazing how these kind of movies work as signs for me meaning they to some extent relate to what's happening in my life at the time i'm watching them. It's as if the writer/director has the ability to peek and tap into the consiousness. Happens with good books too of course.

i haven't seen it yet, but i know i'll like it too... i'm a sucker for movies with good character development... i don't care so much for the plot if the characters capture me... looking forward to seeing this one! btw... i loved the royal tenenbaums... no one ever mentions how good a movie it was :-) see weatherman too...
